There were many MANY different variations to this study and it has been recreated many times to prove that the reason the subjects shocked the person in the booth was because of the presence of the authority figure. For example, the percentage of people who went all the way up to administering lethal levels of shock drastically decreased when another person (besides the director) was placed in the room, undermining the authority of the original director. Also, it showed that the original 65% of people who administered lethal levels of shocks drastically decreased when the director wasn't seen as someone of authority. Milgram never set out to prove that people were evil and his study didn't show that people are evil. It doesn't even show WHY people have an obedience to authority, just that they do. He simply wanted to test whether or not that Nazi's defense of obeying authority was legitimate, and he found that it was. You completely missed the point of the experiment. I really enjoyed this film, it was one of Eastwood's best. Highly recommend it especially if you remember the media at the time this happened. The acting was wonderful in this film, but the stereotyping attacks on the FBI and journalists (especially the woman reporter) were cringeworthy and ridiculous. Another interesting case is that of Ed Humphrey, the main suspect in the University of Florida murders back in 1990. The media hounded him for a couple of months but eventually he was cleared and Danny Rolling was arrested and convicted. The FBI and the media basically killed him at 44. The actual suspect was found and convicted but no one hears about him. When the FBI screws up, they never admit to it and never will. They are not your friends and don't even wear suits anymore. They look slovenly these days.

The black guy did it. I saw that many times living in the south. Part of the bomber profile is white. Of course like when I was growing up there was a reason, and I use the term sarcastically, to say it was probably a black guy. And now they say they have a reason to say it was a white guy. Another issue is the inability for Jewell to sue for slander. The court rulings and laws that make it very difficult to sue for slander date back to the civil rights era. People on both sides of the issue were suing newspapers to shut them up or shut them down. This movie really deserves a number of Academy awards. The acting is excellent. The movie moves along fast. It really shows how the FBI needed to close this case and anybody convenient would due. The newspapers wanted to sell newspapers. The scoop was all that mattered.
The reporter is a minor role but she adds a lot to the movie. I would give it a ten but it is just a little long.
