1:46 this is the joker weve been waiting for. Funny ass movie! One of my favorites. The box at 1:32 already showed Queen Industry. Alternatino. Great cast, good idea, awful script and nonexistent character development.
I don't mind when film makers give it their all but their film is awful, at least they tried. They might not have had the budget, they might not have been able to get a talented cast, they may have had to cut corners on the locations using their own houses and cars to film in. The Informer was held back by none of these issues. It is let down by a lack of effort and care.
Without going into the details of the film (I'd hate to ruin it any more than they already have) The story is paint by numbers, it's straight out of the Hallmark playbook. If you're surprised anything that happens in this film then welcome to the made for TV thriller market, they're all like this. The characters are ridiculously stock. The wife and daughter exists only to have someone to threaten, the head of the Polish mafia is comically bad and I've seen more threatening characters on Sesame Street. We have the obligatory bent prison guard and all the normal evil yet honourable prisoners.
And as for the main three characters. Joel Kinnaman who I love in most things tries his best but he simply has no character development, you don't feel like you really know him or ultimately care what happens to him. Rosamund Pike is clearly an extremely talented actress but she suffers the same fate, you believe her struggles slightly more than Joel's but I'm not sure I cared anymore because of how weak and pathetic she is. Finally we have Common who plays the pissed off NY Cop. He's solid, but again he just feels like any other angry NY police officer, nothing at all has been done to set the character part.
There is little to no action, although his path is a crappy one everything seems to fall perfectly for our anti-hero, if the end is supposed to be a twist it was drawn with a ruler.
This is simply a waste for 113 minutes of your life. There are a litany of amazing films out there, many of them featuring these cast members, sadly this isn't one of them.

Went in blind, not familiar with much of the cast, rarely watching many newer films but was pleasently surprised. A solid acting job all around with relatable chatectors. Full of action and suspense. Really thaught the ambiguous ending worked for this film and would like to see it used more often. Thaught the story was strong with the exception of one loophole, no spoilers but if you have seen think you'll know what I'm getting at! Not a favorite but a plesent way to spend a few hours. Great set of actors making a truly enjoyable movie, very funny. Hilda Doolittle, circa 1906 Hilda Doolittle (September 10, 1886 – September 27, 1961), prominently known only by her initials H. D., was an American poet, novelist, and memoirist. She is best known today for her poetry, and particularly her work written in close association with the Imagist movement of Ezra Pound. H. D. 's early poetry, with its bare, almost primitive language and concise style, is often considered to be the quintessential work of the Imagist movement. Her work from this period is also considered to include some of the earliest and most radical examples of free verse that had been written in English up to that time. These early works of H. influenced a number of other Modernist poets, most notably Marianne Moore, William Carlos Williams, and Pound himself, who would borrow her stripped-down style and use it to great effect for his epic work, The Cantos. H. would eventually distance herself from Imagism, ultimately disregarding her work from that period as a series of failed experiments. Although her style would remain spartan and compact, her later works embrace H. 's prolific reading of the Latin and Greek classics, and in particular the works of Sappho. In addition to this, H. would attempt to develop a uniquely feminine style of poetry, and she devoted a large portion of the remainder of her life to the composition of her " feminist epic" Helen in Egypt, a retelling of the classic legend of the Iliad from the perspective of its female instigator, Helen of Troy. Her works were sadly ignored for most of her life following her break from Imagism, and it has not been until recent decades that her important role in the development of Modernism has been fully recognized. If Pound was the primary voice of Modernism, H. was its primary muse; her influence on the development of twentieth century American poetry should not be underestimated. Early life and work Hilda Doolittle was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. Her father, Charles Doolittle, was professor of astronomy at Lehigh University and her mother, Helen (Wolle), was a Moravian with a strong interest in music. In 1895, Charles Doolittle was appointed Flower Professor of Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania, and the family moved to a house in Upper Darby, an affluent Philadelphia suburb. Doolittle attended Philadelphia's Friends Central High School, located at Fifteenth and Race streets, graduating in 1903. A year earlier, she met and befriended Ezra Pound, who was to play a major role both in her private life and her emergence as a writer. In 1905, he presented her with a sheaf of love poems with the collective title, Hilda's Book. That same year, Doolittle attended Bryn Mawr College to study Greek literature, but she left after three terms because of bad grades and poor health. While at the college, she met the poets Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams. Her first published writings, some stories for children, were published in a local church paper between 1909 and 1913, mostly under the name Edith Gray. In 1907, she became engaged to Pound. Her father disapproved of Pound, and by the time her father left for Europe in 1908, the engagement had been called off. After spending part of 1910 living in New York City 's Greenwich Village, H. sailed to Europe in 1911. H. Imagiste Pound had already moved to London, where he had started meeting with other poets at the Eiffel Tower restaurant in Soho to discuss plans to reform contemporary poetry through free verse, spare language, and the utilization of East Asian poetic forms such as haiku. Soon after H. arrived in England, she showed Pound some poems she had written. He was impressed by their closeness to the ideas he had been discussing and introduced her and another poet, Richard Aldington, to the group. Ezra Pound was H. 's fiancé for a time and created the pen name H. Imagiste for her early work. In 1912, during a meeting with H. in the British Museum tea room, Pound appended the signature H. Imagiste to her poetry, creating a label that was to stick to the poet for most of her writing life. That same year, Harriet Monroe started her Poetry magazine and asked Pound to act as foreign editor. In October, he submitted three poems each by H. and Aldington under the rubric Imagiste. Aldington's poems were in the November issue of Poetry and H. 's poems, "Hermes of the Ways, " "Orchard, " and "Epigram, " in the January 1913 issue. Imagism as a movement was launched with H. as its prime exponent. Although the early models for the imagist group were Japanese, H. derived her way of making poems from her reading of Classical Greek literature and especially the recently rediscovered works of Sappho, an interest she shared with Aldington and Pound, each of whom produced versions of the Greek poet's work. In 1915, H. and Aldington launched the Poets' Translation Series, pamphlets of translations from lesser-known Greek and Latin classics. In total, H. published three volumes of translations from the Greek: Choruses from the Iphigeneia in Aulis (1916), Choruses from the Iphigenia in Aulis and the Hippolytus of Euripides (1919), and Euripides' Ion (1937), and an original play based on Greek models called Hippolytus Temporizes (1927). H. continued her association with the group until the final issue of the Some Imagist Poets anthology in 1917. She and Aldington did most of the editorial work on the 1915 anthology. Her work also appeared in Aldington's Imagist Anthology 1930. All of her poetry up to the end of the 1930s was written in an Imagist mode, with a spare use of language, a rhetorical structure based on metonymy—that is, a description of things as they are —rather than through simile, metaphor, or symbolism. This style of writing was not without its critics. In a special Imagist issue of The Egoist magazine in May 1915, the poet and critic Harold Monro called H. 's early work "petty poetry, " denoting "either poverty of imagination or needlessly excessive restraint. " "Oread, " one of her earliest and best-known poems, which was first published in the 1915 anthology, serves to illustrate this early style well, with all its faults and strengths: Oread Whirl up, sea— Whirl your pointed pines. Splash your great pines On our rocks. Hurl your green over us— Cover us with your pools of fir. World War I and after H. married Aldington in 1913. Their first and only child together, a daughter, died at birth in 1915. Aldington and she became estranged after he reportedly took a mistress. Shortly after this, Aldington answered the national call to serve in the army, and H. became involved in a close but, from all reports, platonic relationship with D. Lawrence. In 1916, her first book, Sea Garden, appeared and she became assistant editor of The Egoist, taking over from her husband. In 1918, her brother Gilbert, a soldier, was killed in action. moved in with a friend of Lawrence's, named Cecil Gray, and became pregnant with his child. When Aldington returned from active service he was not the same man, changed by war, and he and H. formally separated. Toward the end of the war, in 1918, H. had met British writer Bryher (Annie Winifred Ellerman), who was to become and remain her companion for the rest of her life. They lived together until 1946. In 1919, H. 's daughter, Frances Perdita Aldington (although the father was not Aldington, but Gray), was born, after H. had survived a serious bout of influenza. Her father, who had never recovered from Gilbert's death, died himself. At this time, H. wrote one of her very few known statements on poetics, Notes on Thought and Vision (published in 1982). In this, she speaks of poets (herself included) as belonging to a kind of elite group of visionaries with the power to "turn the whole tide of human thought. " H. and Aldington attempted to salvage their relationship during this time, but he was suffering from the effects of his participation in the war, most likely Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and they became estranged, living completely separate lives, but not divorcing until 1938. From 1920 on, her relationship with Bryher became closer and the pair traveled in Egypt, Greece and the United States before eventually settling in Switzerland. Novels, films, and psychoanalysis, continuing life, and loves In the early 1920s, H. started to write three projected cycles of novels. The first of these, Magna Graeca, consisted of Palimpsest (1921) and Hedylus (1928). These novels use their classical settings to explore the poetic vocation, particularly as it applies to women in a patriarchal literary culture. The Madrigal cycle consisted of HERmione, Bid Me to Live, Paint It Today, and Asphodel. These novels are largely autobiographical and deal with the development of the female artist and the conflicts inherent in sexual desire. Possibly because of their closeness to H. 's own life and the lives of her friends and loved ones, most of H. 's fiction was not published until after her death. Kora and Ka and The Usual Star, two novellas from the Borderline cycle, were published in 1933. In the late 1920's H. and Bryher set up a magazine entitled Close Up and formed the POOL cinema group to write about and make films. Only one POOL film survives in its entirety, Borderline (1930), starring H. and Paul Robeson. In common with the Borderline novellas, the film explores extreme mental states and their relationship to surface reality. In addition to acting in this film, H. wrote explanatory pamphlet to accompany it, which was published in Close Up. Psychological problems, paranoia of another Great War In 1933, H. traveled to Vienna in order to undergo analysis with Sigmund Freud. She had long been interested in his ideas, which is evident from the pamphlet on Borderline as well as some of her earlier works. She was referred to him by Bryher's psychoanalyst because of her increasing paranoia about the approach of World War II. The first Great War had left her feeling shattered, and she was terrified that she would not be able to endure a similar conflict. She had lost her brother to the Great War, her husband suffered terribly from his combat experiences, and she believed that the onslaught of the war indirectly caused the death of her child with Aldington: She also believed it was her shock at hearing the news about the RMS Lusitania that directly caused her miscarriage. The rise of Adolf Hitler signaled that another war was inenvitable. found the prospect of this intolerable and it caused unbearable strain on her psyche. Writing on the Wall, H. 's memoir written about her analysis sessions with Freud, was written concurrently with Trilogy and published in 1944; in 1956, it was republished with Advent, a journal of the analysis, under the title Tribute to Freud. World War II and after H. and Bryher spent the duration of World War II in London. During this time, H. wrote The Gift, a memoir of her childhood and family life in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which reflects on people and events in her background that helped shape her as a writer. The Gift was eventually published in 1982. She also wrote Trilogy, published as The Walls do not Fall (1944), Tribute to the Angels (1945), and The Flowering of the Rod (1946). This three-part poem on the experience of the blitz ranks with Pound's Pisan Cantos and T. S. Eliot 's Little Gidding as a major modernist response to the war as seen from a civilian perspective. The poems also represent the first fruit of her new approach to writing poetry, with a much looser and more conversational tone and diction being used as well as a more inclusive approach to experience. The opening lines of The Walls do not Fall clearly and immediately signal H. 's break with her earlier Imagist poetic: "An incident here and there, / and rails gone (for guns) / from your (and my) old town square. " After the war, H. and Bryher no longer lived together, but remained in contact. moved to Switzerland, where, in the spring of 1946, she suffered a severe mental breakdown which resulted in her staying in a clinic until the autumn of that year. Apart from a number of trips to the United States, H. spent the rest of her life in Switzerland. In the late 1950s, she underwent more treatment, this time with the psychoanalyst Erich Heydt. At Heydt's prompting, she wrote End to Torment, a memoir of her relationship with Pound, who allowed the poems of Hilda's Book to be included when the book was published. Later writings During this decade, she wrote a considerable amount of poetry, most notably Helen in Egypt (written 1952–54), a feminist deconstruction of male-centered epic poetry which uses Euripides 's play Helen as a starting point for a reinterpretation of the basis of the Trojan War and, by extension, of war itself. This work has been seen by some critics, including Jeffrey Twitchell-Waas, as H. 's response to Pound's Cantos, a work she greatly admired. The other poems of this period are "Sagesse, " "Winter Love, " and "Hermetic Definition. " These three were published posthumously with the collective title Hermetic Definition (1972). The poem "Hermetic Definition" takes as its starting points her love for a man 30 years her junior and the line, "so slow is the rose to open, " from Pound's "Canto 106. " "Sagesse, " written in bed after H. had broken her hip in a fall, serves as a kind of coda to Trilogy, written partly in the voice of a young female Blitz survivor who finds herself living in fear of the atom bomb. "Winter Love" was written together with End to Torment, using as narrator the Homeric figure of Penelope to restate the material of the memoir in poetic form. At one time, H. considered appending this poem as a coda to Helen in Egypt. In 1960, H. was in the U. to collect the American Academy of Arts and Letters medal. Returning to Switzerland, she suffered a stroke in July of 1961, and died a couple of months later in the Klinik Hirslanden, in Zürich. Her ashes were returned to Bethlehem, and were buried in the family plot in the Nisky Hill Cemetery on October 28. Her epitaph consists of the following lines from an early poem: So you may say, Greek flower; Greek ecstasy reclaims forever one who died following intricate song's lost measure. Legacy The rediscovery of H. 's work from the 1970s onward coincided with, and was assisted by, the emergence of a feminist literary criticism that found much to admire in the questioning of gender roles, and the powerfully imagined female characters that are so typical of her writings. Specifically, those critics who were working to challenge the standard view of English-language literary modernism, based on the work of such male writers as Pound, Eliot, and James Joyce, were able to restore H. to a more significant position in the history of the movement as one of its most significant female voices. Her writings also have served as a model for a number of more recent women poets working in the modernist tradition. Examples include the New York School poet Barbara Guest, the Anglo-American poet Denise Levertov and the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Poets of late twentieth century. Her influence is not limited to women poets. Many male writers, including Robert Duncan and Robert Creeley, have acknowledged their debt to her. 's peculiar style remains difficult for new readers, but beneath the apparent simplicity of her poetry lies a tremendous depth of meaning, hidden in the undertones and nuances of every carefully crafted phrase and meticulously constructed image. Like Pound, H. 's works mark a high-point for experimentation in English-language poetry, and she, perhaps more than any other poet of her time, was able to push the limits of what poetry could be. It does take maybe 20 minutes to get going and get great but once it does, it's fantastic. It's hilarious and a great intelligent crime film.
Everyone is terrific here. All delivering great performances. For me the stand out was Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell who provide some of the best moments of the film.
It's a very creative and stylish film and I wouldn't say there are many flaws in the film. It's a story which gets a fresh and unique take on it and Guy Ritchie really out did himself here.

An American In Paris is not only the crown jewel of the MGM musical pantheon- it is quite simply the greatest musical ever filmed! The music of George Gershwin is staged and performed so magnificently and memorably that it is hard to imagine a greater production unit who could bring such majesty to the screen. So many famous stories surround the filming of an An American In Paris that most of them now are legend. From studio boss Dore Shary's uncertainty over the financing of the project to the groundbreaking final ballet running an unprecedented 18 minutes, An American In Paris remains the most incomparable musical of the 20th Century.
The MGM troupe of actors, producers, directors, and choreographers known as the "Fried Unit" named after producer Arthur Freid) reached their zenith when An American In Paris was made. Yet how ironic that the musical was produced after studio mogul Louis B. Mayer had been axed by Loew's executives and replaced by Dory Shary in 1951. For Mayer's tastes fell heavily upon musicals while Shary preferred the stark realism of his first studio offerings: THE ASPHALT JUNGLE and BATTLEGROUND. It was Gene Kelly himself who went to Shary and pleaded with him to go forward with production. Though Shary said he understood little of what Kelly and choreographer Stanley Donan were talking about, he nevertheless gave the green light.
Kelly's selection and personal mentoring of the dazzling Leslie Caron was a stroke of genius. Caron had been an 18 yr. old ballerina in France and resisted coming to Hollywood to make any movie. But bowing to her mother's influence, Caron did come to America and was cast in the role of Lisa Bourvier, the appealing young French woman engaged to Georges Guetary, who, at the time the film was made, was a musical performer at the Follies Bergier. And how lucky we are that she was cast. She falls for Kelly immediately, an ex-GI living in post-war Paris who takes up painting and is supported by his rich mistress (Nina Foch. The on-screen chemistry between Kelly and Caron is electric from start to finish. And their dance of Gershwin's Our Love Is Here To Stay, performed in the Parisian moonlight, is one of the most unforgettable of musical moments.
Nina Foch is sharply effective as Kelly's acerbic lover who finances his artistic endeavors while keeping him in check. And Oscar Levant? Who better to wash over the piano keyboard playing the music of George Gershwin than the man who knew him best and who once performed Concerto in F so well that some said he did it better than Gershwin himself. Guetary was a splendid choice as Caron's fiancé who "sees the light" near the end and realizes that Caron can never be his. As for Vincente Minelli's direction: the final ballet stands as his masterpiece and has been cemented into Hollywood history forever.
Of course, Kelly shoots through the film like a meteor. From his wonderful interaction with the children in I GOT RHYTHM to the stunning finale where he switches moods, tempos, and costumes to fit the changing rhythms of Gershwin's immortal symphony, it is simply Kelly's most memorable performance. You can enjoy the wonderful soft shoe in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, the deft newspaper dance in SUMMER STOCK, or shake your head at the roller skates number in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, but even those fantastic efforts pale in comparison to the finale of An American In Paris. Ironic that the entire ballet occurs in Kelly's mind as a dream fantasy- for who knows how long it may have been Kelly's dream to team the music of George Gershwin with the backdrop of Paris and the artistic images of Loutrec.
Everyone should be treated at one time or another to An American In Paris. And if the opportunity arises, it must be seen on the screen, not television. Like CITIZEN KANE or THE WIZARD OF OZ, it towers as one of filmdom's grandest experiences- and qualifies easily for inclusion in the top 10 of Hollywood's highest artistic achievements.
Trivia: Only two movie musicals won the Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year in the 1950's: An American In Paris and GIGI- both MGM productions and both orchestrated within the 'Fried Unit. Leslie Caron has said she wanted nothing to do with Hollywood when she was contacted to make a screen test at the age of 18. But her mother finally persuaded her to go to America and be cast in the censors were very concerned about Caron's "dance with a chair" that was seen to be too suggestive. Caron has said: What could you possibly do with a chair. Gene Kelly researched not only the art and images of Toulouse Loutrec for the final ballet, but the life of Chocolate- the African dancer who Loutrec painted at the Follies Begier whom Kelly brings to life in the have said that Oscar Levant's fantasy sequence where he plays Concerto In F, then conducts the orchestra, and finally applauds his own efforts wildly from the audience when it's over, was representative of his hunger for the approval he felt escaped him all his musical Levant's autobiography one of the chapters is titled: My Autobiography Or: The Life Of George Gershwin. Because Big Time Adolescence touches upon an aspect most movies refuse to acknowledge: not first love or first tragedy, but the first (and at times, only) friend. The first influence. At Mo’s age, it was never going to be a girl. He idolizes the much-older and reckless Zeke (Pete Davidson), who is perhaps every parent’s worst nightmare. He’s cool, charming, goofy and generally irresponsible – the popular kid in college who has gleefully lost his way, dragging everyone down in his (affable) wake. Mo is very young when he makes Zeke his hero; the older he gets, the more difficult it becomes for him to justify his choice of worship. And Zeke is too old to not like someone looking up to him; the older he gets, the harder it becomes for him to be the guy Mo once thought him to be. It’s like the childhood crush that battles against time and tide only to fall prey to Darwinian logic. Which is what makes Big Time Adolescence a love story of sorts. It isn’t only Mo’s story, it’s also Zeke’s, because relationships are a two-way street, and the film succeeds at internalizing that gaze. We see them through each other, and not through the eyes of the world that judges them. We see Zeke, who would otherwise be a toxic drug-peddling loser in another film, as a well-meaning and charming man-child – the kind of sincere directionlessness you might put down to “not having a father figure” or good luck. Davidson, a comedian, delivers one of the best performances I’ve seen in a “light” film for a long time – like a clown who wears face paint so that nobody can see his tears. The empathy he generates with a toothy grin and silver-tongued banter is incredible. There is such a little-lost-boy look about his gait, despite being saddled with a role that allows him to not just bring the house down but fool the house into believing that Mo is all right. That Mo and Zeke need each other. That Mo is a little brother, that Mo needs a cool father figure to counter his real (cool) father ( Two And A Half Men ’s Jon Cryer, in a fine movie role). In director Jason Orley’s hands, Zeke and Mo share the kind of relationship that society cannot understand. Sisters, parents, girlfriends, cops, they all watch helplessly – a star-crossed romance that serves as a trial-by-fire for teens crossing over into adulthood. There’s always that one friend that prepares you for disillusionment, heartbreak, cynicism, perspective and…life. Only, in a movie as uncannily sensitive and quietly moving as Big Time Adolescence, it’s not clear if Mo or Zeke is that friend. It’s not clear if the boy turning into a man is the problem or the man being the boy is. These things should never be clear. A deceptively direct film like this just gets it. Posted on Thursday, February 7th, 2019 by Every Sundance Film Festival comes with a handful of coming-of-age narratives showing kids struggling with adolescence in a variety of ways. At Sundance, teens frequently feel like outcasts, have their hearts broken, deal with shitty parents, hang out with unique friends, find inspiration from 1980s music and movies, and learn important lessons. First-time writer/director Jason Orley falls into some of these tropes with his own coming of age comedy Big Time Adolescence, but thankfully, a pair of endearing and hilarious lead performances from teenage Griffin Gluck and comedy prodigy Pete Davidson turn the movie into a real gem. Big Time Adolescence follows the totally chill friendship between 16-year old Monroe (or Mo, played American Vandal star Gluck) and 23-year old Zeke (Pete Davidson). So how does an awkward high school kid become friends with a directionless townie drug dealer? Zeke used to date Monroe’s sister Kate ( Emily Arlook), and even though she moved on from his immature tendencies, Mo continued to look up to the high school legend and hung out with him through his most formative years. The result is two buddies who may not be close in age but have a surrogate brotherhood, mostly because Zeke is still trying to live his life like a carefree teenage kid. And that’s exactly why Mo thinks he’s still so cool. Meanwhile, Mo’s parents ( Jon Cryer and Julia Murney) are a little concerned about all the time he spends with Zeke. They’re not really privy to what goes on during their hangout sessions, otherwise they’d be even more worried. But there’s a concern that all this time Mo spends bumming around with Zeke is keeping him from a much more lucrative life path. And Big Time Adolescence firmly focuses on Mo as he must come to that realization himself, navigating that tricky middle ground between boyhood and impending manhood. The chemistry between Griffin Gluck and Pete Davidson cannot be understated. They truly feel like best friends who have been hanging out for years. Their bond even reminded me of the kind of relationship that my high school self had with some older cousins and and college-aged family friends. The banter between them feels so genuine, and it’s full of witty exchanges and wisecracks. It’s that level of comfort that almost makes you forget that Mo really shouldn’t be listening to Zeke’s terrible advice about ignoring girls to make them like you more. And he certainly shouldn’t be selling alcohol and Zeke’s supply of drugs to his high school friends at parties, giving him a false sense of belonging when all these kids really want is to get drunk and high by any means necessary. But it all goes so well…until it doesn’t. Zeke is the kind of dude who is so laid back that you’re worried one day he’s just going to snap at something stupid and punch Mo across the face. Big Time Adolescence never gets that dark. Instead, it opts to let the audience slowly see Zeke as a threat. He’s not dangerous to Mo in the conventional sense, but he creates a real hindrance for Mo to grow up and realize his full potential. As the veneer on Zeke starts to wear off, his charming laid back attitude soon becomes laziness. The fun times he spends drinking and smoking at home with friends (including Machine Gun Kelly in a small role) without much worry turns into a total lack of ambition. And when all that seemingly invaluable advice and cool experience blows up on Mo’s face, suddenly Zeke isn’t so legendary anymore, no matter how charming and charismatic Pete Davidson continues to be in the role. Big Time Adolescence is full of coming of age cliches: an awkward teen romance Mo has with an endearing classmate (Oona Laurence), getting caught stoned by his parents, and debaucherous, hormone-fueled high school parties that eventually get broken up. But writer/director Jason Orley knows how to use his most valuable assets to make this familiar story shine like new in a hysterical package. We’ve all known someone like Zeke in real life, and Orley perfectly utilizes the breakthrough performances by Gluck and Davidson to bring a great level of authenticity to the proceedings. It makes you feel like you’re the one hanging out in a smoky living room, tossing back some beers with your friends. But it also reminds you that at some point, the party has to end. Adult life is waiting around the corner, but you have to be willing to get off the couch and walk around the block to get there. A true wholesome artistic portraiture in the cinematic sense, Portrait of a Lady on Fire' delivers earnestly. The painting by Jean-Antoine Watteau 'Pierrot' comes to mind as an influence along with Bresson's flair for capturing human interiors in minimal settings though they are part of a much larger canvas of humanity in which they have been placed through fate. The 'Orpheus and Eurydice' parallel deepens and makes the viewer further understand the inner drama. The film is poetry-in-motion employing the trope of proliferating desire and the spirited rebellion from either characters is shown to be ultimately futile and unfulfilled.
The use of Rococo-style ornamental composition of cinematography adds to the illusion of fire, motion and drama within the characters.
The film rids the viewer from the modern world and transports them to a much different time and place - truly a sacred refuge for the senses.
